Egg Carton Feeder

Here’s another bird feeder that can use items you already have around the house. It is easy too, so kids can help or make it by themselves!

 Items needed:

Empty egg carton

Yarn or string – 2 pieces 6” long; 1 piece 12”-15” long

Birdseed

Scissors

Hole puncher

  • Either by tearing or by cutting, remove top portion of egg carton. Discard or save for another use.
  • With a hole punch or scissors, make holes in the corner pockets.
  • Tie a knot on one end of the 6” strings.
  • Thread the string through one of the holes with the knot ending on the bottom of the carton.
  • Thread the string back through in the next corner; knot the end.
  • Repeat with other side.
  • With the longer piece of string, loop through the two loops that you formed above.
  • Tie ends together.
  • Fill pockets with seed.
  • Hang and enjoy!

Note: Many of us probably have the option of having a cardboard egg carton or a Styrofoam one. Here are some thoughts about the types:

TypeProsCons

Cardboard

Eco friendly

Will disintegrate

Styrofoam

Easier to punch the holes in; holds up well

Not so eco friendly
